The next Meet and Greet ?

What about the top of the steens mountains in SE Oregon? I haven't been yet but it is one epic drives over the top of a fault block mountain at 9000 feet out of the middle of the desert. Supposedly the most remote place from a major freeway in the lower 48.

Just an idea.

How about all of the above?

Start a new thread and start putting a M&G together.

I did one, daveb did one, Mac did one. Who is next?

Agree with the cold comment but Anza Borrego in Feb generally has nice weather. Camp on the Ocotillo side of the Salton Sea or on the Bradshaw Trail side. Gooseberry and I have camped out off the Bradshaw trail with the Exp Portal group and had a blast, even got buzzed by harriers each day.
There is also a Glamis North KOA campground that has full hookups, pool, mineral pools and a great burger for those that don't do just out in the desert. I can do either but most of the time prefer out away from the crowds but the KOA is close enough that folks could drive out and meet the desert dwellers.

Always fun to take a cruise through Slab City (look it up) and the other sites. Gooseberry even has a little side route up a wash to the stone cabin "Hotel California" we went to. The Ocotillo Wells Rec Veh area has some mild trails with and great lookouts just outside of the park at Fonts Point. Also great dirt bike riding.

Haven't been to Alabama Hills but it looks great.

Pinnacles and that area around Trona has a rich history of mining and lots to see like Randsburg.

I hosted a meet and greet as well already at the beach but love the desert in the winter. I am game if we can pick a good date....maybe one of these:
Weekend of Feb 4th, March 2nd, March 16th or March 30th looking good.

The next Meet and Greet ?

Andrew is right about the Steens. It is a beautiful place was talking to a friend that grew up in Burns who said the best time for the Steens is August and September. Even then you can wake up to snow.

Re: The next Meet and Greet ?

Hart Mountain Antelope Refuge has a nice warm spring in the campground. Beautiful country.

Crystal Crane hot springs has hookups and a really amazing hot pond. About 20 miles east of Burns. It's one of my favorite spots.

Or you could boondock with at least 10 or so SMBs at Bog Hot Springs, near Denio Junction, but the hot spring is too hot in mid summer. Could be a good early spring spot.

Re: The next Meet and Greet ?

I vote for the ghost towns that Mac wrote a trip report about or Anza Borrego. January-March.
