The next Meet and Greet ?

I was out at Red Rock Canyon, just west of Las Vegas, today sitting on a rock pondering the meaning of life. On the way back I stopped to look at the group campsites that I've never seen. When I saw Site E I thought, "This site would work great for a SMB Meet and Greet." The site would easily accommodate 20+ rigs. Hmmmmmmm? I wonder if anyone would be interested in coming back this way again for a get together?

Re: Valley of Fire Meet and Greet Trip Report

Sometime while the weather is still cool sounds cool to me! The last one was great.

A new thread is needed for the next meet and greet. You up to it, Mac?

Re: Valley of Fire Meet and Greet Trip Report

I was thinking it would be nice to attend another Meet and Greet. You know-- someone else pick the place and dates and set it up. There's got to be some nice spots out there that others have been to, that I have not, that would make a great meet and greet place. I'd like to see other people's favorite camping areas. Maybe we could meet in the Saline Valley (with or without clothes).

However, while I'm out and about I do think of how easy it would be to coordinate another get together. It wouldn't take much to reserve the group site at Red Rock Canyon if folks wanted to come back to Vegas. For camping our rigs would be lined up (but spaced apart) in a large gravel parking lot. But there would be outhouses, a huge group picnic table area, a fire pit with benches and lots of tent spaces (if anyone wanted to bring friends). Depending on one's perspective, it's either a great location or a horrible location because it is just a few miles from Vegas. Costco is about five miles away.

Another spot would be to camp near the Gold Point semi-ghost town that I just explored (see my trip report) and have several days to explore the old mines and towns in the area. This would be primitive camping with no restroom facilities.

And, of course, there's always Zion National Park. It's a great place to camp in February or March (too cold for most tourists). Or we could boondock camp on Goosebery Mesa and do some great exploring in the area.

So, any ideas of a great place to meet -- and a great person to coordinate it?

Re: The next Meet and Greet ?

I think we need to go without a coordinator. Decide where to go and when, and everyone is on their own to show up. If we either:

1. go to a place with reservations (i.e. the North Rim of the Grand Canyon) everyone will have to make their own reservations and then show up and have a great time

2. go to a place with open camping and just show up and have a great time (similar to Toroweap)

We can get a consensus here and go either way. At Toroweap, we did reserve the group site, but probably would have been ok anyway. Valley of Fire is so popular that we needed someone to take care of reserving sites, etc. Our resident boy scout did a great job, but it was too much work for a fun weekend.

I'm thinking that we need more and smaller get togethers.
