The detail in this advice is awesome! I don't have a lot to add, but we just completed a drive from CO out to Death Valley, Yosemite, SF, Hwy 1, Redwoods, Crater Lake, and back through Craters of the Moon (HIGHLY recommended if you're ever out that way!). As others have mentioned, the wildfire smoke in areas away from the coast greatly diminished the pleasure at Crater Lake and Craters of the Moon--and I understand it's gotten even worse since we passed through. The smoke was so bad at Craters of the Moon, it was reflecting enough light at midnight that I could walk around with no headlamp (and no moon). It was a real bummer that we didn't get to have the full Dark Sky experience, but I at least managed some "been there" photos of the Milky Way with an eerie orange/red tint from the smoke. My suggestion would be to consider whether the area you're planning to drive is the type of place that's best experienced outdoors (as opposed to driving) and with good visibility, in which case you may want to save it for another trip.

The journey has begun. Headed from Vegas through DV today, then up 395 to Tahoe. Looks like the Tamarack fire will change my plans to go up 89 from there.
