I guess I should finish it. It kind of makes me tired though.

From Portland I headed to MG's house and hung out awhile. Always fun to see what the mad scientist has going on. For Michael lately it's about 27 projects. He's up only a couple from the usual.

From there I scooted across 22 to Detroit Lake. I didn't get the memo that hell had descended upon this area in a fiery fury. It has. Stay away. It took me til 10 PM and practically to Santiam Junction to find a spot to camp and it wasn't memorable.

Next morning I walked around Clear lake and then did an epic hike I have done before, Sahalie Falls to the Blue Pool and back. Then a nice soak in a nearby undisclosed hot spring, then back to Eugene to catch 58 across to Chemult. This is a great drive. 58 is beautiful, has tons of camping, lakes, hikes, falls, etc. Great recommendation from CarringB. The pic above by the river was on Salmon Creek near Oakridge, OR.

I was starting to get short of time and the fires were pressing in on me, so to speak, so I busted arse for Vegas via 97/139/395 back to Reno. From here I headed east on 80 for a bit and caught 95 all the way back to Vegas. This too is a spectacular drive in an open desert, lost world kind of way. Highlights were Goldfield and the International Car Forest recommended to me here, the big base in Hawthorne and the really amazing molten salt solar farm (Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project). Read up if you are unfamiliar. Very interesting history there.

Thanks again all for some great recommendations for this trip. There is so much out there to be explored. Load up the vans!

FWIW - Here is a picture of Highway 22 near Mill City on Sept 8th 2020. Taken by my sister as the fire descended on Detroit Lake as they evacuated.

Truly disheartening how much forest land has been lost in the last 10 months.
