Yes, you can shoot in that area.

FWIW, there is also a semi-developed target shooting area off one of the USFS roads close to the geothermal power plant. Probably only 2-3 miles away from hot creek. There you can easily set up targets out to about 75yds. For plinking with a 22 or handguns, that is my preferred place to shoot. It gets used often, but I've always been alone when I've gone there.

Re: Trip Report: Mammoth Fly Fishing, Upper Owens & Hot Creek

Be aware there IS a NO SHOOTING ZONE for 4 miles around the town of Mammoth Lakes, the garbage pit behind the geothermal Plant is out of that zone.

If you follow the Little Antelope Valley road behind the geothermal plant ~ 1 mile past the garbage pit on the S side there is another informal range on the N side that you can shoot out to 200 yards.

The best deal is the Bishop Gun Club, dues are $20 a year and they give you the combo to the gate. Covered benchs out to 500 yds, combat pistol pits, and silloutte shooting. Sign up at Macs Sporting Goods in Bishop.

Bridgeport also has a nice gunclub and range.
