Uwharrie!

Just made reservations at Arrowhead in Uwharrie National Forest. Any east coasters been there? Planning some some moderate hiking and biking. This is the annual Thanksgiving trip with me and the girls. Any must see or do's while there? Thanks in advance!

Re: Uhwarrie!

Never even heard of that one, just Googled it. Thanks, looks like it's not too far from us. Give us a good report and some pics after!

And Happy Thanksgiving,
Eric

Re: Uwharrie!

3rd Annual Father/Daughters Thanksgiving Camping Trip

Well here goes. Not much of a trip report because it wasn't much of a trip. If your not familiar with the area, Uwharrie has a lot of horse back trails and OHV trails. The was probably over 100 horse/campers in another campground and plenty of Jeepers there for the OHV trails. We never went to the OHV trails but we did see plenty of horses on the various riding trails.

A good time was had by all and it ended up being colder than expected.

We arrived late Friday and there wasn't any time to explore. I had planned a hike Sat AM with the girls. I held back the fact it was 6 miles until well into the hike and even then never really said how far it was. We ran into a deer hunter almost back to the camp who hadn't seen anything expect us. We hadn't seen anything either which was a surprise to us. I expected to bump at least a deer but no such luck.

Even closer to camp our trail ran into a horse trail where we met a couple of horses/riders. We waited to watch the horses go by when the lead horse spooked and threw the rider. He ended being dragged a few feet before untangling his leg. He ended up being fine except his rifle's scope was damaged in the process.

I rewarded the girls good work with a pizza lunch at the outpost just outside the forest. After lunch we spent the afternoon exploring the local area. Apple season just ended but we managed to find some NC apple butter before returning to camp.

I bought a 1500w ceramic heater on the way up and it worked fine the first night. The temp stayed in the high 20's low 30's but on Sat night it was 20* when I woke up at 6 am this morning. It had a hard time keeping up early this morning but everything turned out great.

Re: Uwharrie!

Sounds like your girls will have another great memory of time with their dad. How can it get better than that?

Your absolutely right Herb. I have been thinking about your fossil expeditions lately because my son is turning 4 in June. He's not so much into fossils yet but he is infatuated by Bigfoot. I think for his birthday we may just have to go Squatchin!
