Yep, sure is. I’ll echo the be safe, stay safe, and add stay healthy.

Lots of lessons in this story.

Thanks Ray.

As a member of SAR there are lessons to be learned from every case.

We often deal with disoriented people on rescues. They aren't thinking straight. Most calls for rescue come from worried family members not the lost party. So we know that the victim isn't going to be helpful much at all. They usually are dehydrated, unprepared, and elderly. This case makes good headlines due to the humor of technology and how obsessed we are but it isn't all that drastically abnormal.

So yeah..be prepared and always let at least one person know when and where you are going in the woods.

This made the local news. I hope they bill the hiker for the rescue expenses.

No I don't think we should punish someone for being scared and not thinking clearly. I don't understand that mentality. What kind of a society operates that way?

In America we have budget for search and rescue. Sometimes SAR will send a bill (donation) to the victim but it is never the full amount and it is never punishment. Depends on state to state. Things are different in other areas of the world I'll leave it at that.

You don't know if it was because the hiker was too scared to answer their phone. We live in a society that is busy and so trained to not waste their time on 10 second spam calls, even if it kills you.

If I was lost I would answer any and all calls, scared or not.

If someone calls in a prank event that requires SAR they can get billed.
Not saying this was a prank, just saying at what point do people need to take responsibility for their actions?
