I sent the links you've done since V-La-V was on the road to a non forum member buddy of mine. Both him and his wife (Sid & Sue) were blown away and wanted me to thank you for the adventure Claude.

Re: VivaLaVida in Alaska [updated 01/23]

More great pics - thanks! I've been to Kennicott and McCarthy several times, very cool places. From what I hear they are much more touristy now. I was there in the late 80s and early 90s. Back in the 80s you had to pull yourself across the river on a two-person hand tram. When they put the bridge in they took all the adventure out of it. In 89 some friends and I camped for a few days on the tailings mound right in front of the big mill. We saw just a handful of people in three days, and even climbed all the way up through the inside of the mill to the top. Really interesting, and probably not the smartest thing to do.

I think photo #34 is the Kuskalana Bridge on the McCarthy Road? That used to basically have no railings at all. Very freaky to drive across! Thanks for the memories!

Re: VivaLaVida in Alaska [updated 01/23]

Thanks Brian. You're right, it's the Kuskalana Bridge.

Kennticott is certainly a touristic place now but McCarthy keeps a kind of special atmosphere, nice to enjoy. Actually, you cannot access the mine buildings by yourself, they are closed except for guided tours...

Re: VivaLaVida in Alaska [updated page 2, 01/26/15]

Thanks shenrie!

Yes, skeeters where really big. They are six different species there, including the big tiger mosquito. Haven't seen any larger elsewhere..! Even with a smoky campfire and repulsive, it was quite difficult to stay outside if not moving, espacially in rainy days...
