This fits the white-knuckle, danger porn genre many media outlets use to report on climbing, back-county travel, getting-off-the-couch, etc. As mentioned in the piece the road is used by folks regularly in every season for outdoor pursuits. It is a lovely area - go.

For sure. It looks like a great road. They don’t take into account that you’re driving in 1st or 2nd gear and enjoying the scenery.

I really enjoy shelf roads like that around here and would make a point to run the Harts Pass road if I was in the area. I did see a post on it at the Dangerous Roads website a few years back that tweaked my interest.

Been there, done that. It was my first exposure to a serious mountain road after moving from the Eastern US, so it does hold a place in my heart as the original "scary" road, but after doing other roads in the PNW and Mountain West, there's nothing especially problematic about it. 2WD sedans go up it occasionally. The biggest challenge is not colliding head-on with the yahoos on dirt bikes that enjoy the adrenaline of careening around blind curves on the one-lane road.

Don't trust the quote about it being a 4-season road, though. For snowmobiles, sure, but that road is not drivable when the snow sets in, for about 6 months per year.

My wife drove it in our 78 Audi a couple times...no issues (bit of excitement when meeting a pickup on a skinny section). My late 60s VW bus clambered it back in the day as well....Great scenery and camping. Fun drive. The thing that might be considered scary is some of the drop-offs next to the track.

Fall will find a lot of hunters accessing high country..Opening of hunting season is generally Winthrops highest liquor sales period, but most of the yahoos stay down in the valley..

Really, Colorado takes it for sketchy high mountain roads...Like Imogene out of Telluride..

That road does not look that dangerous to me. I think the Colorado passes are much sketchier.

We were just up there in the Forester. Didn't seem too dangerous, just washboarded. After the pass is Slate Peak, with awesome views.
