Several of my friends and I did a Tex's Riverway canoe trip drop off at Mineral Bottom in October. We went down in their 4x4 van with a canoe trailer and all of out gear pushing us. I just closed my eyes. It was exhilarating to say the least. I have a picture of the road from the canoe but it does not show its true hairiness. That was a good SMB trip for us, 5 passengers from San Diego to Moab, all of our gear and food for 7 days in, on or behind the van, boon-docking at the Virgin River. Even got 15 mpg or so.
