As Corey's drive along buddy, I appreciated the thought he put into researching the trip. The side stops and hikes were great breaks.

His descriptions are very accurate. We both have extended vans and only had to make a couple of reversals to make tighter turns. We both agreed that the photos, even videos, can't really capture some of the steeper climbs and descents. Some was challenging but nothing a little patience and a few quick looks in the sideview mirrors couldn't handle. Afterwards you can enjoy a bit of the joy that comes from meeting the challenge.

As for height issues, my van is about 8'-6" high and made it through, although there were a couple of places I was glad there was more trail on the left so I could avoid an outcropping on the right.

While most of the socializing was usually in the morning before we hit the trail, the "early to van" evenings allowed us to both test our vans in cold night conditions, something I had never really done. Maybe I'm just getting older but I was thankful I snagged a 12V electric blanket at a truck stop in Green River. Worked like a charm without a significant battery drain.

Thanks Corey for a most memorable trip.

PS
I'm wondering what happened to the two young guys in the Toyota Corolla that were headed in the morning we headed out.

Well looks like a great trip guys. Wish I could have been there as I like colder weather myself. So what about camp fires? No?

I don’t believe they allow campfires in the backcountry. If they did, the fire would have to be in a fire pan.

We usually don’t have campfires, the smoke is too bothersome for me.

Great write up, was just looking at doing this in a couple of weekends while we are down there if we can snag some same day permits as we've been told happens from time to time when folks don't show.

Question is... would you do this in an AWD GMC Savana with BFG KO2 LT265/65R18 tires and a 1" lift? =]

I’m sure you could make it, but with the lower clearance you may hit bottom on a few dips.

As I recall, the side trail to the White Crack has a few deep dips where my receiver hitch hit, but not too bad.

You should be fine. My buddy did it in a 4x4 sprinter. He was white knuckling it a couple times but came out fine. Just make sure the river isn't out of the banks like when we did it :-) You can see the sprinter behind us in this one

It looks like your Savana has the long wheelbase? You shouldn't have any issues with the approach or departure angles. There are a few step-ups/step-downs where you may have to be more careful or even stack some rocks, but you should be fine. Specific places (keep in mind that this was like 10 years ago) were at Murphy Hogback, and the hill north of Potato Bottom on the east side of the loop. Maybe you'll have a few more multi-point turns on some switchbacks, but that's no big deal.

Has the trail got much worse (or is it my memory which had worsened)?

I did the trail about 12 years ago in a Tacoma and don't remember putting it in 4wd except for the sand (water pic above) and big climbing the hill.

I had contemplated doing it in a locked 2wd van but if some of you are worrying about making it in a 4wd van then it surely has eroded badly or gotten harder.

You must have been that guy in front of me on that climb out of Potato Bottom! (ha ha). No wait, that was a Toyota T100, not a Tacoma.
