Winter camping near the Ocoee River

Many of you kayak guys may've heard of the the Ocoee Whitewater Center. It's about an hour and a half from me. A friend of mine (Ultralite) and I took the boys out this past weekend and re-discovered a great campground just down the road from there. We were the only ones there besides the host. I simply can't believe that this place is open with full hookups all winter long. I would keep it secret but I don't see crowds falling on this place so come on, just save me a site!

Here's where the creek we camped on opens up to the lake

I couldn't get the camera up quick enough but in the distance you can see a gaggle of geese we disturbed and they all took flight just as we came out of the woods. It was beautiful.

There are some great hikes in the area. I can't wait to go back when there's more color.

Where is it?

The picture doesn't open for me and since I live nearby I would like to check it out. Name or directions would help. Thanks

I love winter camping! Especially with the van and a furnace.

Looks good!

Not sure what's up with the pics, so I've tried reattaching them a different way.

i see your pix in the first post np. they all have a statement across the top of the pic that says "this image has been resized. click in this bar to view full image." when you click on the bar, the pix get huge, which is awesome. the post above this one shows the pix in about a 3"wx2"h size.

Thanks Shenrie. Good to know yours is working the same way mine does. Anyway, this way is fine. Not sure why I can't edit my own post though. The mysteries of the interwebs.

86Scotty,

I live down the road in Chattanooga and do a lot of exploring in this area. I'm guessing this is the National Forest Campground right off the highway at Parksville Lake? I didn't realize they had full hook-ups open all year long.

Another great place to camp is at Thunder Rock Campground. It's right by TVA Ocoee Powerhouse No. 3. They don't have full hookups in the winter but a few sites are open all year long. It's right on the Ocoee River, really cool place to hang out.

Chilhowee Campground is another gem in the area but not sure what their off season situation is either.

Justin

Walker and Justin, yes, it's just up Hwy 30 off 64, just east of the ranger's station. I have known about it for years and stayed there a few times, but had no idea either that it was open year round. It's not quite full hookups at every site, just power with dispersed water every few sites. They do have a nice bathhouse with showers though. Also, it's on the Reserve America system now but only during regular season (probably March -October).

I've stayed at Thunder Rock. It is really cool too. If you go up the mountain from there you can offroad all the way down into the Cohutta Wilderness in Georgia. 2wd capable IIRC, but off the beaten path nonetheless.

I'll have to check out Chilhowee. Thanks for the tip!
