One thing to keep in mind is that outside of the wintersports areas the hotels can be crazy inexpensive.
We are headed to Moab tomorrow for a week and the hotel room there is going to be $45/nt. For that price we don't even think about camping in the cold, and it really isn't much more than a full service camprground with hot showers, etc.
