What is a "tag"?

When writing a new post like this one there is a box labeled "Tags". It says I should separate tags using a comma, and that I can use up to 5 tags per thread.

But I don't even know what a tag is, so how do i know if I want any? I assume this is not a #hashtag sort of tag. Please illuminate the darkness of my old low tech brain.

Tags help direct attention to your post.

If you are selling a fridge here good tags would be brand names of other fridge manufacturers.

I hate them personally. They are the reason you get 5 billion other adds when searching for stuff on Craigslist etc. you search for roof top tent someplace and everyone that’s selling some sort of rv uses that same term as a tag and every damn rv comes up from diesel pushers to pop top camp trailers.
