Aluminess - drain holes

I am about o install my winch and notice a lot of water collects in the bumper box.
I am thinking about 1/8" holes in each corner or the bottom.

Did anyone else have to do this?

Re: Aluminess - drain holes

My front and rear Aluminess bumper storage boxes (the ones in the body of the bumper), have holes in them which I believe to be from the factory. The one downside is that water can enter as well as exit through the holes. The rear bumper seems to get more water in it (probably as road water gets kicked up by the rear tires).

Re: Aluminess - drain holes

I have holes in front and back bumpers already. I have wrapped everything in both bumpers in trash bags including the winch.

Re: Aluminess - drain holes

1/8" is probably too small to drain easily. Surface tension can block water flow on a hole that small. While driving, the vibrations will let water move, but not while parked.

Try a 1/4" drain hole, or run a piece of string through the hole to break the surface tension.

Re: Aluminess - drain holes

For the record I've tried the opposite- to seal out dust (and water), and failed miserably 3 times- basically wound up with a swimming pool inside the bumper this last time, so now things that can get wet are garbage bagged, everything else gets filthy.

I'd go with holes in the bottom plate near the corners, not the corners themselves. Be sure to take photos of the winch install... have one sitting in the garage waiting for spring!

Re: Aluminess - drain holes

Will do. Aluminess has an install doc they sent me, different from the 16.5 install they posted here.
