another fender vent install
I saw a few posts on venting the engine compartment through the fenders. This is a perfect example of how great this forum is. I had no idea I had a air flow problem. Sounds like a perfectly legitimate reason to cut a big hole in my front fenders.
Not that there is anything wrong with etbadger and saline's choice, they look great. I just wanted something different. After a long search, and almost going forward with the front "kidney grill" of a BMW (one on each side) I found this replica of the Land Rover Sport fender vent.

One nice thing with these vents is, it comes with a template and full instructions on installing them. One bad thing was, the one I ordered came in a carbon fiber "looking" finish. So I had to paint them. I found it in black so that is what the link is to. After determining their position, I decided to take the fenders off before I started cutting. There is a corner brace on the fender, right were I wanted to put these so I had to cut about half of it out. While I had the fenders off (by the way, it was not to hard to get them off) I decided to make it a bit easier for the air to flow from the engine compartment into the fend cavity. I cut bigger holes into the inner fenderwell.
Here are a few pics and I put a few more on my gallery.

Re: another fender vent install
Looks good, and always great to see other fender vent options out there. You're ambitious to remove the fenders first. Definitely a great way to attack the problem though.
So you didn't want the carbon fiber look? Didn't you think people would believe you spent five times the money to save 0.5 ounces of vent weight on a 10,000lb rig?
In your search, didn't you find it amazing that there were so many stick-on, fake fender vents out there?

Dude, those look awesome.
Do you get heat blast from them when parked or driving with windows down at all?

Re: another fender vent install
Those are really SWEET.
I may get brave and put it on my List. One step closer.
Thanks for the research.

Last summer when at idle and with the engine fan running it was very uncomfortable to have my hand in front of the vent on my van.
Great job jw!! Looks great!

Re: another fender vent install
That's the best I've seen yet. I would like to hear about how much heat actually flows through them.

Sorry I keep forgetting to do this, perhaps today. Not sure how accurate though, it's 22 degrees.

Re: another fender vent install
Hey all, thanks for the complements.
As for any heat flowing out of the vents, I haven't noticed much yet. As saline mentioned the 22 degrees where her is, I have only been in cold temps, since I have installed then. I'm not expecting to see a temperature difference on my gage but this summer when I'm driving through the desert, I have to believe there will be more air flowing through the front grill.
Herb, I would have left the carbon fiber finish but I couldn't find a carbon fiber hood for a 2006 E350. If you know where I can find one, I'll strip the black paint right off those vents.
If anyone does want to do this, don't hesitate to ask me for advice. I did a few things different then the instruction that came with the vents suggested and I would be more then happy to share what and why I did.
Cheers

Re: another fender vent install
No help on a real carbon fiber hood, but did you see this thread where a carbon fiber vinyl overlay was put onto a hood?
