Re: Best rainy day comforts or space expansions
Got one after your previous post John. Works great and we love the small size and light weight when stored.

Re: Best rainy day comforts or space expansions
So, what's the advantage over an installed awning? The awning takes up no storage space and covers about the same area.

The main and only advantage I can see of the shadyboy, kelty, etc solutions is that you don't have a heavy awning attached the van that may cause damage (cracking) or worse. However, the attached Fiama awning is definitely a lot quicker to deploy/store. Oh yea, price is another advantage.

I have the Fiamma F45 awning as well as the Oztent, and I agree it deploys quickly... but the Oztent takes 30 seconds to open and may be 5min to get the sides and stays down... It is a great product! I would recommend it to all expedition-ers
I got my Fiamma second hand and cost 200 USD which is ok, and weighs 12kg for 10ft... it is an older model, the newer ones weigh less I think... I would say for off road use the Fiamma tends to rattle a bit... Mine is fitted to the Yakima bars and I have seen no signs of risk of damage even driving over rough surfaces...

Nice rig, Saabman.
I'm a photographer. It's got to be raining pretty hard to get me inside. I always have hours of image processing to do anyhow. I also play guitar and ukulele. When I'm remote (most of the time) it's quiet so I can nap!

Re: Best rainy day comforts or space expansions
We like the flexibility of a freestanding awning too. I got an MSR Parawing in the mid 90's for motorcycle touring and it's always stowed in our SMB now. It's cut with a catenary curve, so it won't flap even in strong winds when its set up taut and true to it's shape. Set up with the included poles it's about 6' in the center. I got an extra set of aluminum poles from Campmor, so we can set it up for clear headroom throughout.
Seems to be out of stock at retailers, I think MSR makes a bigger hexagonal one now.

FB is Folly Beach SC, where we used to live. A great little town on a barrier island about 10 miles south of Charleston. (They've got the same logo on the big water tank on the island.) Here are some pictures.
