Bonehead Mechanic (You) Move-of-the-Day

If you make a bonehead move, mechanically speaking, let's hear about it. Consider it therepy. Here's my Bonehead Mechanic move of the day.

For the past week, I have noticed oil spots where ever I parked my Sporty. I grabbed a handful of gravel/oil spot the other day and quickly determined it was tranny fluild. Humm. Levels haven't budged. I can't find any leaks at the trans or along the cooler lines. Radiator doesn't seem to have a leak. Power steering pump and lines don't seem to be the culprit either. Figured I'd just keep an eye on things and eventually, the leak will reveal itself. Well days go by and its driving me nuts. What complicates matters is I keep forgetting to look for the oil spot and the leak above the spot before I move the Sporty each day. Its not until I move the Sporty I remember that I'm trying to find this FREAK'N LEAK! So on Saturday, after I again moved the Sporty before checking for the oil spot, I said to hell with it and I was going to find the leak no matter what. After searching and searching, I discovered some oily residue towards the front of the pass front leaf spring. Huh?? Wait a minute, there's a hint of oily residue on the bottom of my front bumper. Damn, I forgot that I stuffed three quarts of trans fluild in the front bumper for the Baja trip, just in case. One of the plastic bottles wore out enough that it started leaking fluild which eventually drained out the bumper leaving the mystery oil spots in my driveway. Now that's just plain stupid.

Not stupid at all! A great conclusion to come to, if you ask me.

The only better fluid to find on the ground is chocolate syrup from someone playing the leaky diff prank!
