Custom Bed Platform

LeadDoggy's version for a bed platform "transformer" style.
Picked up a pair of standard bench seat mounts for free, attached some plywood, made custom 1"square tube horizontal supports. Covered all wood in speaker box material.

Hey LeadDoggy,

Nice work!
Why not cover all the wood on the underside?
So does it remove just like the bench seats?
Does your rear seat match the same height of the platform?
If so, how is it as a bed, comfortable?

Peace,

Zugg

Zugg,
thanks for the reply!

Did not cover the underside as for lack of material and it's not visible looking straight in the rear of the van for the average height person.

It will remove just like the stock bench seats after you remove the top platform section unless you remove the middle seat.

The height of the platform is a bit higher than the bench seat height. Made that choise to give me a liitle more room side to side, getting the platform higher to use the window "sill" area.

Have not yet used it, nor purchased a custom mattress as of yet. Hoping it is comfortable, but don't see why not.

Thanks again for the reply.

lead,

Looks great man. Congrats on a sweet looking mod. Very innovative! What are you going to use for the mattress? I have a suggestion if your still pondering on what to use.

Re: Custom Bed Platform

Hi LeadDoggy --

This is perfect -- exactly the sort of platform bed that I want to make for my DIY Transformer (picked up the "new" used 2009 E350 passenger van yesterday! Woo-hoo!)

Where does one get seat brackets? (junkyard? Ford parts department? Something in-between?)

How were your brackets modified for this use (I'm guessing 6 holes drilled in each one to bolt on the plywood leg; did you cut off the top flange as well?)

Thanks!

GrayDawg
got brackets from FAM Vans here in CA. They gots lots. Left and right brackets are the same. Cut off top of brackets with hack saw, die grinder and metal gringer. The supports along the bottom were made from 1"sq tube and flat stock then welded and painted. Purchased a firm 3" thick foam pad for mattress. Very comfy!

Re: Custom Bed Platform

Just wanted to say thanks for the idea(s) in this thread. I just completed my own similar platform. I modified my 4 passenger bench I had moved up a row to fold flat. I ended up with a platform 65" x 75" with the seat folded down. I made my own quick release feet just used the factory latch arm. I have more pics if anyone is interested.
