That is exactly how we operate ours . but I think that they crack on their own from heat and vibrating against one another .

Somebody posted before about replacing them with sewing machine bobbins, apparently it's a perfect fit.

I've had two break. Both broke while pulling the shades down in sub-freezing weather. Now, like others on here, I pull them down from the center. Now at least, thanks to this stream, I know where to buy replacements.

i had one break glued it back together and haven't had any problems, although i do mostly leave the shades down. had two strings break that was kinda annoying

I have replaced broken string with a stainless steel wire. See the post about 3/4 the way down the page:
