DAY/NIGHT SHADE PLASTIC KNOB DEFECT

Has anyone experienced this? Brand new day/night shade knobs were cracked on original install on both passenger and driver side over the rear windows. Of course, I didn't catch it during the walk-through and I'll be writing SMB for replacement parts shortly. Not sure the new pieces will fare any better. The screws seem to fit into the knobs without chaffing, so the only thing I can figure is plastic aging process, heat, and/or UV exposure (though not direct), or maybe the screw was torqued too tight. Think I'll get more than a couple for replacement, and maybe start shopping for wood knobs...

Re: DAY/NIGHT SHADE PLASTIC KNOB DEFECT

I have the same problem. Now, 2 have fallen off. I do not use them to open the shades. Instead, I put my hand in the middle to open or lower them. I thought I would replace them with brushed silver color knobs if I can find them. Have not looked. Wood knobs sound like a good idea if they do not stand out. Have thought about removing the knobs and screws all together but have not checked that out yet.

I believe the screws were too tight and caused the knob to crack. I replaced 2 and they have not broken again.

I would tend to think that Mike is right on the money. If they were over tightened it would certainly be a possible cause. The company that make the Day/Night Shades is Specialty Window Coverings at (574) 262-5190. I would imagine that Sportsmobile may have some. I broke one of the hanging brackets and called them and they mailed the new part right out, no cost to myself even though I told them I broke the mount. A+ on customer service.

Some of mine on my 2008 have broken and been replaced. I'm going to turn a new set out of aluminum to replace the OEM ones. THAT should cure the problem!

DAY/NIGHT SHADE PLASTIC KNOB DEFECT

I have had several break off that were essentially never touched.

My plan is to go with snap-on curtains on my new windows as the shades have also proven to not be kid friendly...

Yeah Scatter, I could probably get rich and retire. They probably wouldn't cost more than about ten bucks apiece in labor to make. I could retire along with Eli and his awning brackets.. We could be living like kings!

Re: DAY/NIGHT SHADE PLASTIC KNOB DEFECT

I contacted Peter early last year and be sent me three replacements at no charge . I have not had any more failures now that I maintain a small space between the neighboring Pull Knob .

Don't use 'em. They're crap. I simply pull down the lower or center bar and push it back up to close. Easy.
