DIY Compressed Air

Me and my buddy knocked out quite a few projects over the last 6 months..
One was the DIY Compressed Air Project.
I wanted Compressed Air for the obvious tire filling capability, to blow away sand and most dirt off..

Our DIY project consisted of the VIAIR 2.5 Tank and the Atomic(Australian) Air Compressor kit and lot's of parts from HD..

Here are some pics:

VIAIR Tank and specifics

Air Pressure Sensor Switch

Mounted under the Sporto

The Air Compressor mounted in a old Ammo box

Air Compressor sits on cut out mouse pads for the padding effect

Air Compressor Sealed in Ammo Can with Air Filter - trying to make it Desert Sand Proof, water resistant

Air Compressor Accessories we all need

Final Configuration - where the grey water tank used to be..

If anyone have questions, feel free to ask..

I have AIR!

My buddy deserves most of the credit (integration consulting) but he made me do most of the work..

Good setup and good writeup. One suggestion, try to increase the heat sink of the compressor or find a way to thermally couple it to the ammo can so the compressor doesn't overheat. Compressors draw a lot of current and can get very hot in the best of circumstances.

Maybe I missed it... how was the tank physically attached to the vehicle?

It also looks like you might have some room left over in the ammo can to actually store a little ammo.

Yup, 4 bolt holes for the Tank. Had to temporary remove the step moulding cover on the side barn doors to get the bolts hole drilled through to the underneath . They were hard to get to.. With the step moulding removed, 4 more holes for bolts and nylock nuts to hold the ammo case flush to the floor sheet metal underneath..

With the plastic step moulding removed, I happend to noticed SMB's selection for cheap plywood and glob of some sort of sealer gooze in the middle of nowhere(looked like dog poop) that must have accidently gotten there.
Must have left quite a smell when it was brand new.

As for the ammo case pump case, there's actually room underneath left for another pump (double air compressor pumps).

Haven't decided yet but there's room for more: either one more smaller 1.5 Gallon Tank, or a longer 3 gallon tank with one or two air compressor ammo can setups.

The proof of concept was successful, now we can make it better cuz 2.5 gallons of air doesn't last very long.
