Never heard of a Espar muffler being installed upside down. Please elaborate.

The heater muffler chamber is offset from the intake and output. The larger portion should be higher than the smaller to avoid the accumulation of carbon and condensation.

Spent the weekend winterizing the van. Its already freezing here in the Rockies. Removed the Espar D2 and cleaned it, installed the correct fuel pump and put it all back together again. I am not mechanically gifted, some would say cursed. But it wasn't that bad. The heater works great for the first time since I have had the van. Mike from Rixens was a great help.

Thank you for posting a resolution to this issue. Hopefully your heater will continue to work like you want it to./

Consider running the heater on high temp for 5 mins before shut down. Short cycling at low temps can result in gumming of the screen.

Also, if starting the heater from very cold interior temps, the heater will likely cycle twice. The combustion chamber needs to get warmed up. I have on occasion, when starting from very cold temps, held my hand across the outlet vent to help the unit warm up a bit quicker. Kind of like an Exhaust Back Pressure Valve
