Exhaust upgrade
I ran up to Zylstra Automotive Friday and had Shawn install a Cat Back 4" exhaust in hopes that I might reduce my EGT ' s and eliminate some of the back pressure on the 6.0 . I also had him change the Spring in the Thermostat on my Water Pump with good result's finding that this allowed my Oil/Water Temperatures to stay within 5 degree's of one another . He installed a lighter spring that allowed for the the Pump to open at a 10 degree cooler temperature and it made a difference in Performance coming back over the Grapevine . I also ran up to SportsMobile to pick up some item's and visit and was shocked at how busy they were with both 4X4's and Sprinters , the shop was absolutely packed . While speaking with Jonathan he had another couple come in to place a deposit on a Ford 4X4 . There were several 4X4's that were looking like they were ready for delivery including a very nice Black Club Wagon with my Baja Design overhead light bar on it , really good looking Van that is for one of you in British Columbia .

Re: Exhaust upgrade
Cool mods Gregg. What muffler did you get? How is the noise level inside the van afterwards? Much performance increase with the cat-back exhaust?
I've been thinking about doing this to our van as we tow quite a bit but the wife and kids won't like any added noise in the cabin.
The t-stat mod sounds good too. Did Shawn use the 203 degree thermostat?

Re: Exhaust upgrade
Prior to dropping my van off at SMB West, I had the same exhaust plus a cold air intake and a couple other "tweaks". This was with the van still bare cargo inside.
To my ear there was a small increase in engine noise. Nothing that would stop me from doing it. Again, important to note there isn't anything in the van to stop the noise.

Re: Exhaust upgrade
Greg, didn't you tell me that the smog won't be affected? Monday she goes to SMB. What did they charge to do the upgrade if you don't mind me asking If sound is not an issue I might go for it.

Re: Exhaust upgrade
The Cat is the last "smog" component in the system. Therefore, adding a 4" exhaust from the "Cat back" cannot effect your smog (or anything behind the Cat for that matter).
In fact, if you simply deleted your muffler in favor of a straight pipe, you would still pass smog. However, the noise tickets might start to pile up... ;-)

Re: Exhaust upgrade
Killer, I will look into this. California scenery rocks, but the state management sucks. I just want to comply even though I hate it.

Re: Exhaust upgrade
Dave ,
The only difference noted with regard to sound , is on the initial start up . It sounds very healthy with a deeper sound and once up to idle and running down the road very little difference . I was amazed in the difference at the tail pipe in the reduction of back pressure
while the original could be felt at a distance of 5 plus feet from the end it now requires you to put your hand within 12"s or less . My EGT's dropped off substantially which was the reason for the upgrade in the first place . Total cost was $550.00 for the exhaust and Shawn was very careful to custom fit the new and larger pipe so that the AGM Battery and other item's were cleared . The Thermostat was removed and a lighter spring installed , no change on thermostat only the actuator spring and I believe Shawn set it to open a 195 degree's . I will call him next week and validate this for you guy's ! The charge was $120.00 for this and I was in and out in and out 3 hours . Shawn work's on so many of the Ford Ambulance's that he knows all of the little tricks and has all of the specific tools needed . I am extremely pleased with the changed temperature setting on the Thermostat .

Switchfoot ,
I will post the brand of exhaust for you this next week . It is one that Shawn has had good results for sometime and it actually looks neater that the stock factory exhaust .

Re: Exhaust upgrade
I just checked my receipt. The brand isn't there, but I'm about 90% sure it is a Magnaflow.
The other plus that Greg just mentioned is that it is much smaller which results in better ground clearance (and you can't see it sticking out).
