The only doghouse option I've ever heard of is various years of vans. My 04 has a smaller 06 doghouse for better foot clearance.
That is a fairly complex part. It needs to seal all the way around, it needs to insulate both thermally and acoustically, it need to provide some storage, it needs to be as small as possible to maximize interior room, it needs to fit fit all the various engine combos, it needs do that at a reasonable cost. All things considered, Ford has done a good job with the doghouse. You probably could do a better job of any one requirement at the expense of the others and at a higher $ cost.
I'm happy with the later year upgrade in my van, but some may prefer the extra storage and glove box in the earlier doghouse.
