Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

I'm using Budd & Co. http://www.buddandcompany.com/ -- because they're honest and located close to my house.

Yes, they have now seen my Sportsmobile, but I've got to say they're still pretty flummoxed by it.

Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

My Dynatrac has developed this leak as well on the driver's side at 41k miles. I am getting both sides re done for $350 at a local 4x4 shop.

Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

My early post said that Dana 44's and 60's did not have a outer seal. I have now found out that this is incorrect. Starting with the '99 Superduty the Dana 50 and 60 have this outer seal. Spicer does make a replacement but you will nee to replace the hub seal as well.

Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

I had this fixed yesterday by a reputable 4x4 shop. On the Dynatrac the seals are inboard at the differential. $344, not too bad.

Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

That is a great price! I guess they had to redo your wheel bearings at the same time since they were in there? or did they go through the case?

Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

Funny thing is it started leaking after I had the bearings re-packed. Figures.....
They pull the spindles, axle shafts, carrier, etc. to get to the inner seals. They had it done in 5 hrs.

Even on the front axle? When they did mine, the guy didn't do a good job, got some debris while installing the seal(s) and I developed a leak. He said to park it on an angle to let it drain. But it never drained and continued to leak. I took it to another shop who said he scored the inner seal when installing the seal/axle. I don't know jack when it comes to that stuff but it seems if the inner seal is conpromised it will leak. Possible???

Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

figure a full weekend to do an inner seal if you have some mechanical knowledge and want to do it yourself. five hours is probably reasonable, except if they score the seal and you have to get it done somewhere else

Re: Front axle shaft seal leak

It did cost me but under 500 bucks. The other shop said they will compensate me. Really don't want to take the SMB back there though

Argg, I noticed this the other day when we were wrapping up our last trip. Leaking out of the passenger side of my dynatrack front diff exactly like yours. Need to find a 4x4 shop in Flagstaff. I'll report back when it gets done.

Whats the danger driving this in it's condition? Can I just make sure the diff fluid levels are at proper levels for some short trips, and to the shop?
