Heat management

To those that went on the DV trip, the photos are great! Wish I could have gone.

Who's beige van is it that has the hood / fender vents (Jeff?)? I'm curious how much improvement, if any, you found in terms of heat build-up in the cab after installing them. I've toyed with doing something similar, but they are situated forward of the engine and I'm not sure how much they would really draw the heat out. Any issues with water intrusion into the engine compartment?

Thanks -
Phil

This thread may help shed some light on the louvers.

I'd like to see some air exhaust temps from those louvers. Jeff, do you have an infrared thermometer, and can you get some measurements?

Ah, I remember that thread.

Jeff, any updated thoughts on the effectiveness of your louvers? Could you post a couple photos of the louver installation?

Van runs hot

Phil

Since I last posted I put bigger louvers in the hood and put a 16 inch fan underneath the louvers. That fan sucked some major hot air out the hood.
However I removed the fan because I thought it was hitting the radiator hose.. I also put a 4x24 scoop underneath the bumper.. My thought on this whole deal are;
The louvers look cool.

They do let out hot air.

They make me feel better.

BUT...... I don't think it runs cooler. The fan comes

on just like without the louvers. I do think

it runs cooler at slow speeds.

I have oil temp gauge, trans temp gauge and engine water temp gauge.
It runs at 200 or 215 under any load.( max 232 ) Oil temp gets up to 220 at times. trans temp stays under 215.

I do run it hard, 75 to 85 MPH ( must be why I get 10 miles per gallon.)
Ford never designed this van for a 6.0 diesel. They run hotter than the old 7.3. As I'am sure you know the 2008 vans have a much bigger radiator and frontal opening...

Cheers

Jeff

P. S. I have lots of pictures but I cant figure how to resize them to fit on the forum...

P.S.S. I have some cool pictures of the 2008 Death Valley trip which hopefully you will see before 2009...

Jeff -

If you want to email some photos direct to me at phil@pacificventures.net would be great. I can resize and post here for anyone else that is interested. My interest isn't so much for the engine to run cooler (actually, just wish my engine would run at all now .... but that is a different story), but to help keep the engine compartment cooler which in theory would keep the cab area cooler.

Can't wait to see more photos from the DV trip!

Thanks -
Phil

Hood vents

As to the water issue, I have a piece of plastic I tape over the louvers. It doesn't rain much in southern Nevada.
