Heat Reduction Project

I did a few things to help with heat management underneath where the exhaust pipes run... overall its helped by being overall 20 to 30 degrees cooler; transmission temp, floor temp and underneath temps..
Replaced the transmission pan with a deeper pan with cooling tubes, Derale:

Exhaust wraps from Summit-Racing:

Heat shields, for a few spots and transmission lines

The only first-hand experience I have with heat wrap material, was to take it off my starter on my Chevy 350 powered FJ60 Landcruiser. Based on a lot of purely second-hand info, I had concerns over it trapping condensation and accelerating rust damage.

Anyone else heard of this, or more importantly, does anyone have first-hand experience with this?

I have a lot of experience with rust if that's what you mean. In Indiana this would be death for the muffler for exactly that reason, nothing needs help to rust out there in the land of salt on the roads.

Even if it accelerates the rust, the trade off is cooler running. If you're not in Indiana, Salt Lake area or driving on beaches it might be a legitimate trade off in terms of life of the muffler vs. heat.

I'd probably would not have done the exhaust wraps if I lived in a rainy or colder climate; but probably still do the Larger Aluminum Transmission Pan. It barely rains in SoCal..

Thermal Wrap

After seeing the Post by NRL I began to consider this option of heat control and checked with several of my racing friends for a viable source of these materials ,all three recommended this company for numerous solution's for heat control . www.thermotec.com

Thanks Greggde, I forgot who made them since I shopped and bought from Summit-Racing that was close to what I needed related to keyword: heat shield and heat sleeves.
Yes, Thermotec makes the wraps I used. And the heat sleeves for the transmission lines near the exhaust.
I also thermo sleeved most of the important electrical cables near the exhaust also. The exhaust pipes were baking for instance the secondary alternator cable going to the house battery.

They also make the micro louver shield which I used for the catalytic converter which was roasting the van floor above it also.
From their website: "A flexible, yet durable air heat shield featuring micro air louvers to keep the surface extra cool. Movement creates dynamic air flow, cooling by natural convection"

Shields it from radiatiing heat above it(also added reflective heat adhesive sheets on the sheet metal below the floor) and keeps it and the inside floor cooler.

I'll take a more pics of that and my new custom exhaust (from the cat back)..

Heat Management

NRL ,
Yes by all means post photograph's , all five of my Van's have been Cooker's and this seems to be a worthwhile solution . I had one of my vans literally melt one of my expensive Swim Fins that I used for my Belly Boat on a trip to Panguitch Lake , Utah , this would not have
been so bad if I could have kicked in a straight line once on the water , but the harder I kicked the tighter the circle became .

I've had wrap on my 93 chevy 4x4 since day one. 14 years and no problems but I have yet to pull it off to look. Although I have not been exposed to salt I did a bunch of off roading with it and for the first 5 or so years always washed the undercarrage. It's covered with dirt and looks brown now. The reason I put it on was that the starter would get so hot it would lock up. I heard the same thing about rust. But behind the converter where there is no wrap I got all kinds of rust and had to change some of the exhaust just behind where it splits.
