Larger gas tank & van hood mask?
I am considering adding a larger feul tank from 31 to 46 on my New SMB. It will not be ready for months . It will be done in Tx . It is for my Quigley conversion.
What Are your thoughts?
I also am thinking about a van hood mask. Any thoughts?

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?
Unless the larger fuel tank creates other build complications, it will be a valuable addition in my view.
SMBs obviously don't get great MPG. The extra range of the big tank is good for both convenience and peace of mind on remote trips.

I thought the 46 gal tank was a part of the standard conversion. Maybe not. About the hoodie, forget it. I've never seen such a silly 'accessory'.

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?
I have the sports-bra. I wouldn't do it again. It traps a lot of debris and dirt under it. It was sold as a way of keeping bugs off the hood instead of a bug deflector. I have never seen the benefit.
As for the fuel tank. Will or can SMB even install the 46 in a Quigley? (I didn't think it was an option.) If they can, I would highly recommend it. Some have tried adding it on later but found they couldn't, at least here in California with its air pollution regulations.

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?
FWIW, I would definitely go with the larger tank. 31 gallons in a V-10 with 12mpg gives you a practical range of only 250-300 miles, less if you're bucking headwinds or towing. I'm very happy I have my 46 gallon tank.

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?
I thought the 46 gallon transfer flow tank was a part of the SMB4x4, necessary to fit the components, but built larger. Whereas I think Quigley cuts the tank down and welds it or something (?), but my point is I didn't know you could get the 46 gallon transfer tank without getting the SMB4x4... an assumption, but I'll be curious to hear what happens!

3M Paint Protection Film is a good way to protect the hood & front fender areas of your van. It's clear in color & pretty durable. Here's a website that has an example of it. You could also Google it.

As for a bigger fuel tank, without a doubt it's an excellent idea.

Re: Larger gas tank & van hood mask?
I believe any 4x4 upfitter that certifies to FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) can install a T-F tank. Salem-Kroger does, SMB does, QuadVan does, Quigley chooses not to.

Random old thread bump --- my 2002 Quigley (according to the documentation) had a cut down tank, but gained a 46 gal tank from SMB on the build sheet.
So, at some point, SMB would put a 46 gal in a Quigley. Not sure if that is the case now.
