good eye - yes, a bit worried. It def wasn't one of my better connection details, but even knowing it wasn't a smart approach I never made any adjustments during the build

I talked myself into leaving it as is knowing the tubing is galvanized inside and out and I sealed up the gaps and bolts/nuts with that rubber stuff you see advertised on TV that can seal up a screen door enough to use as a boat bottom Fingers crossed cause it's raining today.

If you can access the fiberglass from the inside, as a secondary waterproof measure, you could use Eternabond Tape. Pretty amazing product.

Nice, thanks, but I think buckkiller is referring to the bolt through the bottom hoop of the rack at each bracket. Water sitting in the bottom hoop would be bad over time.

Re: New SMB Owner: 93 Ford E250 2x4

Put together a little price list for those of you who might be considering building your own roof rack. Assuming you have most of the equipment/tools, here’s a quick break-out of what I ended up using. Keep in mind I went with Grade8 or Stainless Steel (SS) hardware throughout to help avoid any surface rusting so that increases the price a bit. I also went way overboard on the painting - that number can come down. Hope this helps.

Materials
(10) 1” x 10ft EMT (conduit) – $6.67/ea = $67.00
(4) 12” x 12” 14ga sheet metal (cut into all required pieces and shipped by ebay member) = $24
----------------
$91.00

Hardware (not all hardware was used, but posted the full price since I used the majority of everything)
(24) box 3/8”-16 SS lock nuts (25 pieces) = $7.00
(16) box 3/8”-16 x 1.0” Grade8 cap screw (25 pieces) = $7.50
(8) box 3/8”-16 x 1.75” Grade8 cap screw (10 pieces) = $10.50
(48) box 3/8” SS washer (50 pieces) = $7.00
----------------
$32

Consumables
Welding rod (purchased a 5lb box $17, but only used ~10 rods) = $5.00
Oxygen (I used this for the ladder and rack, so split the $30 refill costs in half) = $15.00
Acetylene (I’ve used this for 3 projects now, so split the $75 into thirds) = $25.00
----------------
$45

Paint
(2) Duplicolor Etching primer @ 5.75/ea = $11.50
(4) Rustoleum Multicolor Textured @ 5.75/ea = $23.00
(6) Rustoleum Textured @ 5.75/ea = $34.50 (truth be told, I ended up buying a half gallon of satin black and shot the final coats with a spray gun)
----------------
$69 (this number could come down substantially)

Tools
Hand tubing bender (I used this for the ladder and rack, so split the $80 cost in half) = $40
----------------
$40

Misc.
(24) Plastic caps for the 3/8” cap screws (I purchased 40 for $14) = $8.50
(25) 120lb tensile 12” nylon cable ties (50 pieces) = $5.00
----------------
$13.50

Flooring
(4) 2ft x 4ft kennel floor panels = $135
----------------
$135 (optional)

Re: New SMB Owner: 93 Ford E250 2x4

It's not too often that I get a chance to report using the SMB vs. working on it - although it has to be said that all the work I've done are improvements (not repairs) to make using it even more enjoyable. With that said...

My wife had been wanting to visit Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ, so for mother's day (I stopped working on the van) we loaded up some take-out Mediterranean food, chilled wine, family and made the epic journey 30 minutes away into the heart of Newark, NJ - talk about a safari! Needless to say we had a very nice time. The park was a perfect little oasis in Newark and gave us a chance to enjoy the SMB after all the work I put into it. We have several big trips planned this year so a quick little shake down was in order.

wife, daughter, me and my wife's nephew's son.

Looks like you had a great time! Although, I imagine you are possibly the only SMB'er to ever make a trip solely to a park in Newark, NJ

We have to do a NJ-PA meetup one of these days. I'm near Philly, and there's another new SMB owner near me, too (Stillvanin).

There's a really nice black SMB here in central NJ, although I'm sure he's not on the forums. I've seen him a handful of times down by my office in Neptune NJ and work with a guy who knows the SMB owner through a friend. Just a week or two back I saw that same black SMB on the highway doing at least 90mph+. I jumped on it and got up to about 100mph and saw that I still wasn't catching him and decided to back off.

At one point I saw a CL listing for this same SMB for $109K. Kinda guessing he's not in to meet and greets

Among my many other little SMB projects, I finished this one up last night in prep for our 5day camping trip at Robert H Truman state park starting tomorrow.
