Penthouse Top 'buttons'

I have a 4 month old penthouse top.
The plastic buttons around the edge holding the top gasket are coming off.
They seem like worthless cheap buttons. Are they supposed to have any strength holding the top rubber in place?
They get knocked off washing it...
Looks like more are ready to come off.

Fixes? Better buttons?

I'm a little miffed at the quality of hardware and how fast parts come off.
One of my folding support struts has broken off also.

Thanks.

Who applied the coating? SMB? Or were the buttons removed and then put back in again?

Re: Penthouse Top 'buttons'

Len, that coating is direct from SMB.

I'm not trying to gripe about it, only curious if others have had their buttons pop off.
The bite they get is minimal.
I will check with SMB to see if extras can be obtained.

I like my penthouse top.

Oh, and to add. The thought of siliconing or gluing in these buttons?
Anyone had these buttons pop out?

Re: Penthouse Top 'buttons'

My buttons don't hold well either. It's low on my list of priorities now, so I haven't paid much attention to it. The seal on my VW top was glued in place. Any idea why this one isn't?

Re: Penthouse Top 'buttons'

My buttons are holding but when they sprayed the top, the
gasket was put on more poorly than the original one.

Re: Penthouse Top 'buttons'

Mine are fine. Four years and counting. Only problem I had with it was I needed to glue a small section between buttons where it was sticking out from the penthouse.

Re: Penthouse Top 'buttons'

I never noticed those buttons until this post. There are no problems with any of the buttons on my 2002 penthouse. I wonder if SMB changed their process or their supplier for putting these buttons on.

Re: Penthouse Top 'buttons'

Going on three years and all buttons are fine, ... BUT our top does not have that coating. I suspect that coating increase the reach the buttons have to cover due to the extra thickness.

Re: Penthouse Top 'buttons'

No problem w the buttons. Mine seem to be tight. The pic of yours shows them as backing out or loss?? Odd. Could be a supplier quality problem to SMB.
