Under the General-Technical Heading there is a thread that is entitled

Adjusting the PH Springs

Jack (YVRR) posted a good description with a photo.

You can also find it by doing a search for
Portable Lift
and use YVRR as the author.

Re: portable electric penthouse lift

I doubt that we paid that much for ours. But it uses the same type electric motor as used on adjustable hospital beds which can't be cheap.

We don't take ours along unless we have our kayak on top but I wish we would have brought it along on our trip to Yosemite Valley a couple weeks ago. It snowed about 4" this first night (fortunately, we have braces at each corner of the penthouse to keep it up in such cases) but the problem was getting the top down in the morning with all of the snow on it. We kept the doors and windows closed while bringing down the top but it was still a problem getting the canvas tucked in before the top came down with a bang! It we had the portable lift with us, we could have used it to control the descent...<g>
