Raised roof top question

I'm planning to install a fixed 19 inch height roof top on my van. (like on the picture)
I would like to know if it will be enough to install a bed for my two children. Based on your experiences what is the minimum height I'll need?

E350 with EB50 configuration

I don't think there is enough room for a bed up there. Maybe if the bed rested on cabinets that were ~6" below the stock roofline.

Raised roof top question

Here is an example of a upper bed platform that can be raised or lowered as needed. Installed in a Ford fixed high top van.

Jack, that looks like a CCV creation, but I've never seen it. Any more pics or info?

Garage
We had a 24" fixed top and our daughter slept crossways in the back until she was too tall.

The problem with a bigger bed is it cuts off headroom below and makes the lower bed cramped. Camper tops are typically 30" high.

Eric, It is in fact a Colorado Camper Van creation, and according to the article it was Derek’s first real van build . "Project Motovan" more pics and info can be found here. http://www.off-road.com/diesel/project/project-motovan-building-an-offroad-van-part-5-53220.html

That was KTMrider's van....If I'm not mistaken that bed platform failed and KTMrider had the interior redone.....

24" would be really tight and I do not think it would be at all comfortable. My main concern would be the heat accumulation in such a tight space at the highest spot in the van.

Sleeping lengthwise and side by side - Min 32" to 36" above the mattress with the kids sleeping lengthwise in the van. They would have to crawl in and scoot around to get into bed.

Sleeping across and set up as a single, maybe you could get by with 30" to 32" in height above the mattress since they could roll out of the bunk.

Just my thoughts.

How old/big are your kids?

Our van has a raised roof and we have about 30 inches clearance for our platform bed in the rear of the van. It's not perfect but works fine for us, and I'm 6'-3". Depending on how old you kids are, I'd think 20-24" clearance would be fine. Heck, kids like cozy small spaces for the most part. Not ideal for a 200 lb guy, but seems like that would be fine for kids - at least while they are young.
