Removable Carr Steps

Another forum member I met at a meet & greet a while ago asked me to do a write up on the mod to make the Carr Steps quickly removable. It's a pretty basic mod that I learned from an old forum member "Badger" (so he gets the credit).

Idea is just to make the steps easily removable for when you need the clearance for 4 wheeling. If I'm going on a trip that I know I will need the clearance, I just take them off in advance and leave them at home.

With the steps (Ignore the fur on bumper and hub. Van was prep'ed for Burning Man a few years ago).

Without the steps:

4 d-rings per step (look to be 5/16" diameter x ~2-3/4" pin). I seem to remember I chased out the ID of the step holes just a little with a drill. Also had to enlarge hole in the brackets to accept the pins. You want a snug fit so they don't rattle. They rattle anyway, but the who van does, so who cares. I do use spray lube on the pins / step holes occasionally. Sometimes a hammer is needed to encourage the pins into or out of the holes, but I'd say 90% of the time I can do it by hand. Just depends on how crudded up everything is at the time.

Hope this helps out some! Enjoy ....
