And yet Scotty's approach is the same or similar to how I consider going into any project. I know its meant in humor but it does highlight how something "easy to do" in thought evolves into a space launch by us DIY's !

FWIW despite the spare carrier cross member seemingly not too strong its location and design does lend to added rigidity aft of the rear axle. Ford installed it on every E-Series whether the spare was included or not so its not completely superfluous or unnecessary.

Thanks for all of the help everyone, and yes, I mean everyone!
Time to get cutting and get some measurements. 20 gallon tank and pump should be easy to fit, alomst too easy. Is putting a propane tank there completely idiotic?
I have my compressor and espar mounted to the usual driver side rail, so this would be the next largest space. Assuming i can get the ports in a somewhat accessible place and have them protected, is the downside just convincing the propane man to fill it up down there?

Good to know about the hitch being the new support member. I didn't really think of that. Luckily I have a hitch.
I used an angle grinder and a sawzall. It wasn't that fun really.

Well judging by the-world-according-to-Eric, that places you somewhere between a low rent, low class, brutish person and a gentleman. Congratulations.

If you're concerned about rear frame support, here is the Ford document outlining rear crossmember placement. Basically, on E-series without the rear tire carrier, one crossmember is required, and can be a "hat" style like the transmission crossmember, or can be a tubular crossmember.

While planning my own propane locate project, I think I came across a fill relocation kit, or something, maybe on the Manchester site. The big downside would be reaching under to turn on an off the use valve, you're supposed to close the valve before driving.

Ya, i guess that is the backup plan if I can't get the guy at uhaul to fill it up. I think it is over 30" between the frame rails if i remember correctly, so a lot of tanks will fit.
