repair of rear under floor storage
Hi,
I presume someone has encountered and already fixed this.
I have a 2006 e350, on the rear under floor storage (oem spare tire area) the plastic/rubber is developing a crack I'd like to patch before it gets much bigger.
Any thoughts as to the best way?
Thanks.

Looks like a pic of a frozen waterfall.

Oops
This is the "right" picture, I'm not sure how I copied that dropbox link.

I didn’t know they made those out of plastic - if you are like most of us, quite a bit of ‘weighted’ stuff is store down there, so my first recommendation would be to make a center bracket that spans the length (positioned in the middle) which attaches to the frame rails for added support (I would also weld a 15”x 20” plate in the middle/top of this bracket to help support more of the center of your box). Can only speculate that’s the reason the tear began in the first place.
***if you did this, you could lay another plate (same size) on the inside of your storage box and bolt through at the 4 corners to secure the two together. Run a bead of silicone in the outer edges of the two plates to weatherize from the elements (water, dust, etc)

JB Weld makes a good plastic repair goo. That's what I'd do... and then, at the least, cut a 1/2" piece of plywood that fits down inside the box to distribute weight and protect the plastic bottom from when you drop the jack down there.
Of course... two's suggestion above is the right way to do it.

It looks like the plastic is just a covering for some insulation. The is metal, good thing, behind it.
Ill look at the job plastic weld.
Thanks!

That is probably just a sprayed on "liner".

I suspect that the crack is in the plastic coating over a steel box. If so I would think that it might be a good idea to peel it back to exposing the steel that may be compromised by rust. Moisture trapped between the coating and the steel could cause weakness. I had a similar problem in that area where the battery cage is attached. The steel that the cage was attatched to was completely rusted out so the battery was essentially held in by friction. I had to rebuild the support for the battery cage when I replaced the battery. Of further note. the big battery that was in my rig is really crammed up in with very little tolerance. After a couple of years the battery cables shorted out on the frame even though I thought I replaced exactly as I pulled it out. I am just glad it didn’t burn up the rig in the middle of the night.
