I think the smallest rim size you can go with is 16. 17 is the smallest for the SMB 4x4 2008 and later.
I prefer a smaller rim because it give more rubber for offroading, which in a 2wd isn't an issue so much. I'm upgrading to 17s (that's the plan anyway) so I can get an E rated tire in 35" (that's the plan anyway).
I think it's probably easier to find 16" rims and tires for them in the US, but more so in Mexico.

When I bought my van I was told there were limited styles because of the weight factor of my van (10,000+). Seems there are a lot more to choose from seeing the rigs coming off the line. You probable won't reach that weight with a 2WD but it's still a factor to look over.

for what it's worth, this morning i was checking out tirepackage.com for rims and they're having a pretty decent sale on American Racing and ProComp rims.

Dave, congrats on the new van!
I'm 99.9% sure that we've ridden in the Piutes together with Louis. The SMB is an outstanding moto transport and camping vehicle. I still want to take mine to Landers for a weekend of camping and riding.
