Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

I am revisiting this addition after wrecking a hoop step last weekend in Gorman. Should have done it a long time ago but now that the van is slightly higher with the suspension adjustments I just need to get it done.

Any current updates on functionality? I use the van as a daily driver for work and get in and out of the side doors 20 times a day. All the units out there still working as designed?

Rock Slide Retractable Steps

They are no longer being made.

The step/sliders are very cool, and I love mine, but they have been high maintenance. I need to replace the spherical bearings in mine as the salt on Utah roads has affected them negatively.

For those who bought them, there is a new ECU available that protects the actuators by cutting off at 7 amps. Works as both an up and down stop, and to protect the actuators. I recommend the upgrade.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

Hi Tom, thanks for the info. Mike (owner?) told me on the phone late yesterday they were still making them. Or maybe they still have some left over from a previous run?

Sounds like you would do it again Tom?

Tom, I really like ours as well. Ours were installed 4/13. Do you know if the new ECU was being installed then or is it newer than that. So far we have had zero problems with ours...

No, none, but they do tuck up very high and out of the way.

They've been unreliable. I can fix them myself, but it's getting old.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

I'm also having issues with them. I've already replaced one actuator and a second is failing. A shock popped off which required over an hour of work to put back on. Now that shock is failing and needs to be replaced. My main gripe is poor access to replace things. I'm thinking access plates might have to be cut in. It will possibly ruin the slider aspect. Unfortunately pulling them off is time consuming and a PITA but so is trying to climb in without a good step.

I have a friend with AMP steps who has also had issues with those as well.

My eyes are on the steps Aluminess is making. Not sure if they are sliders.

Re: Rock Slide Retractable Steps

Looks like version 1 of the retractable step might be the best solution after all.
