Shady Boy Awning

All, I took the plunge and added a Shady Boy Awning to my van. I should have done it years ago! I've tested it in the desert and in the rainy southeast. Is it perfect? No, but it did everything that I wanted and it only weighs 15 lbs, is compact when stowed, and is a snap to deploy and stow. It seems to handle wind gusts well and is acceptable in keeping the rain out of the side doors and providing a bit of shelter.

Here are some pictures of it stowed and deployed right after I installed it. It took only about an hour to install as well!

Well that is all for now, got to get back on the road again…

Re: Shady Boy Awning

Also, looks like it's wider than the storage- does it fold out into a trapezoid or is it rectangular when out?

Re: Shady Boy Awning

It folds out to a rectangle when deployed. I just got back from dragging the van through the brush on the way to and from Medano Pass road and the awning held up great!

Looks nice. I might be in the market since my Fiamma is now in pieces.

Re: Shady Boy Awning

How does this awning deploy? I doesn't look like it has a roller. Do you have to basically unfold it and then insert rods? Looks like it might be combersome.

Re: Shady Boy Awning

I just posted about the OZ Tent Fox Wing...it kind of looks similar but much larger.

Re: Shady Boy Awning

Cumbersome is rather subjective. It takes a few minutes to set up and takedown with only one person. I have ALS so I’m I have a bit of a disadvantage rigging things. There are some nice videos on youtube that shows how to deploy and take them down. I liked this solution because of its size and weight. It is tiny and featherweight compared to everything else that mounts to a vehicle. It seems to withstand wind fairly well also.
