steel thickness

Hello,
I am planning to build an underfloor storage out of steel and I was wondering if 16-17 gauge would be strong enough?? Or is it already overkill?
also I am thinking of making another 3" deep pan in front of the rear seat (in a RB50 config) to use as a shower pan. and then just have a carpeted lid on top so you don't see it. There is enough clearance from about 24 to 45" behind the passenger seat. It shouldn't interfere with any floor support beam.
And how about to build bumpers? Still in steel...
Thank you
JT

Re: steel thickness

Stand by. I had the guys who build boxes for SMB Austin build me one. I used the SMB specs. They are at work. I've got the metal thickness (expressed in gauge, not actual thickness-there are some standards problems with this). I will post.
