Yeah, that's basically how mine were made. I'll shoot a pic when I swap vehicles later this weekend. I don't have the van with me now.

FYI - the "oh shit" point isn't much further than the latch allows anyways, that's why I think a new hinge assembly is necessary.

The pin comes out of those OEM hinges pretty easily just by pushing out (just use a small Phillips screwdriver or something). Then you can see how far you can get them to open. Based on installing several sets of rear pop-outs, I don’t think the upper hinges will open much wider than standard. I also imagine it’s a security thing, as a wider pop-out would allow someone to easily reach in and open the door from outside.

When I was installing the rear window pop outs on my van. I played with how far out I was comfortable trying to force it. It wasn't much further than the latch allows.
