Re: Upgrade from Ford Factory Stereo; Speaker Location?

Depends on how many speakers you have, 4 or 6. Try http://www.crutchfield.com. They have a better lookup tool. Mine - 2006, white one, 6 speakers.

Where would they be?

I have two up front, one in barn door, and either one or two in rear doors.
Sounds like 5/6?

On Crutchfield for both 4 and 6 speaker 2002, it showed me the same one, black.
It looks to me look the rear speakers are all connected together, so the plugs on my year are the same.

(edit) I figured it out. One plugs into vehicle harness, other one is different sex for plugging into radio.
This one plugs into harness, and is cheaper:

So, instead of the double din metal sleeve and big Kenwood escutcheon, I use the black one way clips secured to the radio side, and the escutcheon from the kit? And I still have to Dremel out the dash opening?

What is the triangular piece of black plastic for?

My head unit is a Kenwood dnx6980.

Yes, the radio will not fit unless you widen the opening. It's not quite double din standard size, close but no cigar.

The triangular piece attaches to the back of the radio. There is a metal railing on the bottom of the radio opening that it slides on to. It's optional in my opinion but it provides a more secure mount. The DNX7140 does not have a threaded nut to attach it but there is a hole that you can use a wood screw or similiar.

Re: Upgrade from Ford Factory Stereo; Speaker Location?

Thanks. Now I can't get the OEM head unit out. I have the correct tools.

Is it fastened at the rear? Is removing the doghouse best way to get rear access?

Pull harder! Removing the dog house will give you considerable access.

I pulled harder but the tools pop out at a certain point.

Might take out doghouse and see if I can push from the back.

I got it out, I needed to push out sideways on the tools. (duh)

The rear support won't fit on the 6980, even if I could mount it, it would obstruct the cooling fan.

Re: Upgrade from Ford Factory Stereo; Speaker Location?

A long zip tie around the stereo/bottom bracket would be a good substitute.

Tweeters, yes. That's what the stock Ford audio setup seems to lack -- the high range.

Any idea whether I could do this with the stock Ford radio? Is there a way to wire tweeters up in parallel with the front speakers, or do I need a head unit with extra channels?

I'd love to keep the Ford head unit for its theft-repellant looks
