Did a few minor repairs since the initial shake down run in Death Valley.

Replaced two cabinet latches with new ones SMB sent. The originals kept rattling open on washboards. The new ones (on the right) are the push and twist design with metal strike plates. The look like they will keep the doors closed. The original strike plates are plastic and show a lot of wear for only being 4 weeks old. Mine was the first 4x4 vehicle SMBW put these latches in so I am the guinea pig. (The push and twist model number is M1-2A-13-1.)


Replaced the metal keeper on the Aluminess bumper access door. The washboard rattles the set screw out. I needed duct tape to hold down the door for much of the trip. Check your set screws, but don’t over-tighten them. The keeper is pot metal and won’t take much torque. (Learned the hard way.)

Replaced a window shade. The washboard frayed the chords.

SMB has been terrific about getting me replacement parts.

Finally: (unrelated) after 20 odd years of using a PC I bought a new IMac. All I can say is WOW! Why didn’t I do this years ago?

Had the back door windows and the two side door windows darkened. Husband has wanted them done and finally had it done today.
We didnt do them ourselves figured it was worth the money to have them done by someone who knew what they where doing.
Husband is happy....so life is good.

I built an oversized Hitch Haul from wood!




It also doubles as an entry platform...
- I remove the wood tray (painted orange), flip it over...viola - entry platform
- The sides are made from 5/4 decking. The bottom/top is 1/2" plywood 2'x4' length and width
- Platform makes getting out of the SMB much easier
- We also store our shoes on the platform ... keeps the interior cleaner and no smelly shoes in the SMB.
- I likely will router out some of the wood sides to lighten it, as its is a little heavy
- Survived 1000 mile trip to Mammoth Caves last week.


Sits nicely in the corner of the garage...out of the way



I used a truck load extender from harbor freight to support the tray.

Got home from Baja last night to a waiting SMB in my shop. The Rhino looks great (better than expected). Here is a pic of the hood. PO had a bug deflector, so there were some slight rub spots on the hood from that. Also had the lower rear quarters and the lower parts of the rear doors done as well.

Finally took advantage of a decent day and washed, polished and waxed the rig. Seeing how my van is Moab Red, scratches and swirl mrks show up almost as easily as on a black rig.

Discovered www.autogeek.com a couple of weeks ago, and a few $$$ later I had a box full of polish compounds, sealants/wax and a power buffer w/ all sorts of pads. No more waxing by hand for me....

For a 2001 the van only had 42k on it but it has been parked outside for the last 3-4 yrs and the Red was getting a tad dull/faded. Well, she is looking like new again. 98% of the scratches etc... are all gone. all of this only took maybe 2 hrs or so - power tools rock!!

Granted the shine will go away pretty damn soon seeing how I live on a dirt road, but I'm stoked the paint under the dirt/dust looks and feels like new again.

Next on the to do list - trim a little bit of the bumper so I can install my Aluminess swingarm/box....
