arctictraveller, does your van use the stock 2001 Ford van calipers?
When you install new components do the brakes drag at all?
What rotors are on your van F350?
What caliper mounts are on your van? F350?

You might contact the company that converted your van and ask them if they know of a cure for your problem.

Yes, the inside pads.

"Proportioning valve. How much braking is your rears actually doing?"

I have no way to tell, but the issue in not a lack of braking, it's uneven wear of the pads.

"Bent mounting bolts / pins?? Been a while since I have dealt with my van brakes so do not remember all the pieces. Some components were not replaced right?"

I would think anything bent would be obvious as everything was assembled. In addition, it's the same issue on both sides and it's unlikely something would be bent the same on both sides. Pretty much everything has been replaced more than once. If your referring to something incorrectly installed, that would be difficult as the parts only go in one way.

Since I'm working on the rear axle, as far as I know, everything is stock Ford. When I order calipers and pads, I get the correct ones the first time when specifying a 2001 Ford E250. As for the brakes dragging, I'm not sure I could tell, but I suppose they could be.

"Have you checked the PVC valve Just tripping on the V10 thread, sorry."
Not yet, but good idea, thanks..........

Semi float or Full float rear axle? If it is not a caliper float issue, could it be wearing wheel bearings on a semi float axle?
Have you power bled all the brake fluid lately? Is it possible the brake fluid has absorbed moisture and when it gets hot it expands and makes the brakes drag?
The fact that they are both wearing in the inside at the same time leads to a system issue not a single component.

Semi float. That's an interesting idea, I'll check the axles for play, but a few years back it was completely rebuilt including all new bearings, but since the bearing rides directly on the axle, it's possible. Brake fluid was completely replaced and bled at the last rebuild.

You could solve this by finally replacing that semi-float and putting on a real axle. You know you’re about 500 miles from a wheel coming off!

Good though on the axle bearings!

As for a proportioning valve, the E-series hasn't had one since '88 or so.

The ABS module controls rear brake bias these days.

Fine........ you win, I might know where one is, but I'd still like to solve this problem.

Wouldn't I know if the axle was worn down enough to be loose? I've had it happen before and it made a howling noise. The current one is silent, although I've lost a lot of hearing since the last one.

I think most of the failures on here were not preceded by bearing noise. Most likely early indicator seems to be weeping oil seals. If you jack up the van, you should be able to feel any play however.

You might try contacting PMB Performance. A friend of mine owns this business. He got his start rebuilding calipers for Porsche 914s, but now does all kinds of stuff (including stuff for Jay Leno). If you talk to Eric, tell him that Ernie referred you.
