BrianW and LastBlackE350...
Let me explain the scenarios and solutions better.
In the first one, the steep grade meant that you were riding the brake coming down the hill and the brake lights were on a lot and thus hot. Bumping into the tree broke the brake light filament but caused no visible damage. Hence, you could start the van but not get it out of Park since the computer didn't think that your foot was on the brake since it didn't get a return signal because of the broken tail light. The solution was to put the transmission in Neutral before starting it.
The second one was that the rough road had caused the fuel cut-off switch to be activated. The solution was to simply reach behind the side kickboard the reset the switch.
We then learned that each of these solutions was in the Owner's Handbook!
Another note…we talked about the gasoline cut-off switch some time ago with the idea that it could work as a simple way to disable your van when parked out in the boonies. So I emailed the Sportsmobile employee who lead those tests and asked him how they disabled the cut-off switch. He said that they simply hit the side kickboard with a rubber mallet. Not sure I want to do that very often.
