This seems to be a feature some automakers did for a short time.
I guess as a courtesy light and to make sure no one was hiding in your vehicle from a horror movie scene?....

This feature is very undesirable now that window breaking addict thieves looking to see objects in our vehicles.

Wonder if there's an easy way to turn this off.

Thank you

Behind the Driver Seat on the Wall of the van is a small Box that is the Timer controller. you can Dis-connection that. It also controls the Chime.

My 1997 does not have one there but I guess the jury is still out as to whether 1998 is similar.

I don't recall such a timer on my 2000 E-350 and my 2002 E-250 seems to have a remote entry in about that location.

He was asking about his 96.
Yup on MY 1996, its Right by the Seat belt connection behind the Drivers seat. On the Driver-side wall. This is also where you would splice in your alarm for Door lock controls.

This may also have to do with the Options package your van was built with. My 96 was / is Fully loaded .

Not a perfect solution but a simple one …. On my dome lights I have a switch I can turn off one or both dome lights.

May not work for you, but my 2008 has a 3 position switch on the dome light. ON until a timer drops out (about 5 minutes) AUTO = on when the door gets opened, etc. and OFF that keeps it off all the time.
