Aftermarket cruise control..?

Hello guys,

Still thinking about my project, I'll definitely have to start it from a pre owned van and to built a new interior, as specifications I need to live in all the year are not possible to find in built SMB.
Looking for used diesel vans, I see often vans without cruise control, but I really want this option to drive long distance... As the choice of used diesel vans with low mileage isn't large, I would like to know if one of you already installed aftermarket cruise control, or even better original Ford cruise control on a van which hadn't before?
Is it complicated ? How much does it cost? Any issues? All information welcome.

Already thanks to all !

Claude-Alain

Re: Aftermarket cruise control..?

I had the same problem with no cruise control. I found the factory kit through M&R electronics. It was not hard to install. You need to remove the airbag and then you need a steering wheel puller to remove the steering wheel.Kit comes with a new steering wheel with the contols built into it.After you install the kit you need to take it Ford so they can turn on the cruise control fuction in the PCM.Kit cost just under $400 and another $100 at Ford but all in all well worth it.

Hope this helps,Wildhare

Re: Aftermarket cruise control..?

Fords with Throttle-by-wire (Powerstokes starting in ~97?, gas in '03?) cruise control only requires adding the buttons, and flashing the PCM to activate it. You cannot add afermarket cruise to a throttle-by-wire rig.

Aftermarket cruise control..?

I used a cutoff broomstick handle in my MG Midget, VW bug and van. Just wedge it between the seat and the gas pedal. Worked great when on the freeway.

Re: Aftermarket cruise control..?

Thanks Larrie. But as it's possible, I would prefer original system with commands on steering wheel, more ergonomic in my mind.

One of the drivers at work did something similar to the broomstick thing to an older truck without cruise. He would leave the truck in 9th gear and mash the pedal was all the way to the floor. The rev limiter kept the thing from speeding. I'm not sure how he could take it though. Having the engine bounce back and forth off the rev limiter would drive me crazy. Probably not to good for the truck either. It was an old piece of junk and everyone was hoping he would blow up the engine so they would retire the asset. It never blew up. Some of these old trucks are pretty hard to kill.

Don't tell Fred!
