AIR BAG LIGHT ON DASH STAYED ON

When I started the SMB the air bag light would blink 3 times, go off, blink 4 times, go off, then come on and burn steady. The code is 34. Something probably to do with the seat belt, I was told at Power Ford and Lincoln in Tustin, CA., phone: 714-832-3300. Ron Maki is the service manager. I recommend them, so far. Also, Lynn at SMBW had told me that a SMB owner had told her he had good luck with them.

I found out that if the airbag light is on, the air bags will not deploy.

I took The Lighthouse in this AM to Power Ford. They found a chewed line under the seat. He said that a dog chewed it. They have seen it before. Of course, my grandson swears that his dog NEVER chews cords, even when we left her alone in my van.

They fixed it "under warranty" as a favor but said I would have to pay if it happens again.

Ron Maki is also getting Ford to pay, under warranty, for my leaky heater core my local repair place installed. T. Robins Ford in Costa Mesa refused to pay. When I get the check, I will post it in the correct thread.

Re: AIR BAG LIGHT ON DASH STAYED ON

That happened to me when I rotated the passenger seat and disconnected the seat sensor wire.

That would be my guess also. Rotating the seat 'chewed' the wire a little everytime. Finally you get the code. It is a problem with the rotating seat.

I have had the same problem from rotating the seat. Now I always rotate it slowly and check the cord as I do it.

Good to know about that Ford Dealer. Always nice to find good people.

Re: AIR BAG LIGHT ON DASH STAYED ON

Tucson Ford Dealer could not understand or fix the same problem, mine was a pulled plug and reconnecting did not make the airbag light turn off. SMB Texas extended the wires by feet and disconnected the battery to make the light go away after. I always rotate the seat the same direction now.

The reason, explained to me, why it won't deploy is that on airbag fire, the seatbelt retracts forceably a split second before, pulling the passengers face back as far as possible. If it's not connected, meaning the seatbelt reads as not plugged in, then ostensibly the passenger is not restrained and flying foreward into the deploying airbag, which can be fatal.

I've considered adding a disconnect switch, since the van doesn't have a "disable passenger airbag". I don't think kids should never be able to ride in front, but I do thing the airbag is dangerous for them.

Just unplug the cord under the seat. An easy disconnect switch. Mine comes unplugged every so often when I swivel the seat and the airbag light comes on. I plug it back in and the light goes off.

Ford has a kit. You can see it in all the '03+ E450 U-haul vans. You may be able to order form U-haul. They do sell some common replacement E-series parts.
