I just got back my DC power 270amp alternator back from being refurbished. I installed a leece-Neville while that was out. Wondering if I post it for sale or keep a spare.
I carried one that I replaced after it had an issue they kept triggering the charging light. It still made power though, so I kept it as a spare for the cost of the core charge...
I would keep it especially if its still good. I recently replaced a starter because the engine wouldnt start (it was a wiring issue) ,I decided to keep the old starter since it was still good.
Carry it in the van as a spare. We had one go out a thousand miles from home and I was able to swap out in the lot of an Auto Zone. In addition to keeping the trip on schedule it was worth it just for the spousal points bonus.

I don’t carry an extra one, only because it would take up premium space & weight (alternator = about 15lbs, then 200lbs for the mechanic I’d have to take along in the event his services would be needed)

No you’re way off…..any mechanic willing to ride around with you waiting for your alternator to crap out would have to weigh in excess of 300lbs.
