back up light circuit

Does anyone have a tip on where to tap into the back up light circuit other than on the rear end at the lights? Do the backup lights trigger from the shifter in the steering column or the transmission?

If they trigger from the shift lever going into reverse, being able to tap into the that circuit would solve a few problems for me. One less wire I need to pull though the firewall.

Re: back up light circuit

Looks like it may be the Black/Pink wire in the trans plug. Check this Schematic -

Re: back up light circuit

I've got the E4OD trans. Thanks for the schematic. I'll start digging into wiring harnesses later in the week. I would be real hesitant to tap into a wire between the trans and the TCU. I'd be afraid of screwing up the imput to the TCU. I wonder if Ford was nice enough to run a pink/black wire out of the fuse box to the reverse lights. The wire would run from the trans to the TCU to the fuse box for circuit protection before it heads out to the reverse lights wouldn't it?

Re: back up light circuit

Yes, the switch trips the relay and that powers up the lights.

Re: back up light circuit

Ford does run an aux backup light circuit on vans with HD trailer towing. On some vans it's orange, some it's black. Since you have a wagon, you probably have it. The 7-way wiring terminates above the rear axle, inside the drive's side frame rail. This circuit has it's own dedicated circuit, and it's fused for 30 amps I think. I use this for my aux backup light, as well as trailer backup lights.

Re: back up light circuit

When I was under the van this morning tapping into the tail light circuit on the trailer wiring harness for the license plate light I did notice something a bit odd. The stock trailer wire harness is a 4 wire. It looks like there may be a larger possibly 7 wire connector plug attatched to the frame rail on the drivers side just aft of where the 4 wire connector plug and harness departs to the hitch. If possible I would still like to find this circuit under the dash somewhere. Hopefully by the fuse box. From the fuse box it's a short run to the 3 way switches for both the trailer back up lights and the bumper back up lights. Both of the back up light systems will have their own relay and fuse. The wire I need to tap will only be used as a low draw trigger for the relay.

Re: back up light circuit

Most all of the trailer wiring is in the power distribution box under the hood on the drivers side. The stuff under the dash is mostly for the brake controller. If you do have the DH towing (most vans don't) and have the 7 wire plug on the driver side over the rear axle (like carringb said) you could test the wires to see if you have one that powers up when shifting into reverse. (Don't Run your self over!!!)

Re: back up light circuit

I tapped into mine in the drivers side step well..It was in the main harness that runs to the rear...I think it was also black and pink.

Yup. That's the HD towing harness connector. Relay is (or should be) in the power distribution box under the hood. It's always a pleasant suprise to go looking for another circuit somewhere, and it turns out the factory already put it there Of course, I usually don't realize that until after I've already run my new circuit.

PS - for running your switch to the stock relay.... Ford already has included some "pass-through" circuits that run from the connector near the brake pedal, into the hood compartment on the driver's side.
